Landscape Imaginary with Daniel & Clara: Uncanny Landscapes S3E5

Artists Daniel & Clara discuss their work, concerned with the way humans gaze upon and interact with landscapes and the natural world. Plus events and announcements.

Thank you for following Uncanny Landscapes. Here’s a new episode of the podcast; an interview with artists Daniel & Clara. Thank you to our paid subscribers - Uncanny Landscapes eats up time and money, and every paid subscriber helps alleviate that issue. And thank you to all of our subscribers and regular listeners - UL recently hit 50,000 downloads, which is far beyond what I’d expected from this endeavour. You make it all extremely worthwhile.

The podcast (and all back ‘issues’) is also available at:

Events:
Before the podcast, a few announcements.

The East Anglian Landscape Network is a loose gathering of landcape artists, writers, architects, archaeologists, psychogeographers and more from across the East of England. After a very successful meetup in Norwich last weekend, we’ll convene again in COLCHESTER, ESSEX, with speakers including Daniel & Clara on the 21st of March. For info and (free) tickets visit tinyurl.com/EALNCol

I’ll be doing a reading in OXFORD with a performance by folk musician and composer Sharron Kraus on 17th of March. Here’s a link for info and tickets.

If you’re in Lisbon, Portugal, I’ll be performing and introducing the film We Are Making a Film About Mark Fisher on the 26th March at Damas in Lisbon; and there’s a big screening in London at the legendary RIO cinema in Dalston on 28th of march!

Daniel & Clara

Daniel & Clara are two people, one artist, making work concerned with the human interaction with landcapes and the natural world. Since 2010, they have acted as a single artist to make work across a wide variety of media - from film and photography to mail art, installations and performance.

As you’ll hear, their work has, in recent years, taken a turn towards a nuanced and conversational approach to how we look at and interact with nature - what does it mean to be in a landscape? What parts of a landscape are in our minds, as opposed to ‘on the ground’? Does the act of looking at the natural world impart some of ourselves onto it - in our minds, or in reality?

This uncanny approach to nature and landscape has been energised by D&C’s post-Covid life on Mersea Island - an island on the Essex coast in eastern England, located in the mouth of the Blackwater River estuary. But the work they create in and of their region has implications far beyond those shores. I hope you enjoy listening to their ideas, and visit their website to see the work.
