Stuart Bowditch is a sound artist, field recordist, musician and DJ whose work often explores his home territories of East Anglia, in the East of England.
His new project Constable Ambisonic involves new recordings made at the locations of the paintings of John Constable (1776-1837), the great painter of the English landscape. This project is made in conjunction with Constable 250 (summer-long events celebrating the artist’s 250th anniversary) and will be exhibited as part of The Hay Wain: Walking Constable’s Landscape at Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich beginning in July.
Stuart’s recordings will also be used for live performances he’ll make with some of British sound’s finest artists:
27th June with Kate Carr at Old Hall Community, East Bergholt, Suffolk TICKETS
18th July with Simon Scott, The Minories, Colchester, Essex TICKETS
5th September with Matt Shenton, Cuckoo Farm Studios, Colchester, Essex TICKETS
3rd October with John Bowers, Christchurch Mansions, Ipswich, Suffolk (tickets tba)
This episode is a ‘mini-episode’, with a conversation with Stuart as well as longer (a few minutes each) snippets of his recordings in five different locations. I hope you enjoy it.

A Celebration of the General
A folk-horror poem in five parts with artwork by Tom Eglington (Thistlebone, 2000 AD) and design by Stefan Musgrove (Moth House Studio). This piece is inspired by enclosures in early-19th century East Bergholt, Suffolk, the home of the painter John Constable, and is released for his 250th birthday this month.
The poem is made from sampled texts from 19th century peasant poets, 16th-century historical documents, John Constable’s letters and biography, Holst’s translations of the Vig Reda and more. Tom’s gorgeous papercut images are folk-horror interpretations of Constable’s painting ‘A Celebration of the General Peace’ made on what was then East Bergholt Common, but which was enclosed before he finished the painting.
